How to Change Your Mazda Key Fob Battery

Mazda Interior

Unfortunately, even the highly efficient and long lasting batteries used by Mazda don't last forever. We recommend scheduling an appointment with a trained service technician at Hiley Mazda of Hurst to replace your key fob battery and avoid damaging your keys. However, we understand that some individuals prefer to go the do-it-yourself route. The following guide will illustrate how to replace your key fob battery and get back on the road.

What You'll Need

Before you get started, make sure you have the following things:

•Mazda key fob
•A flathead screwdriver wrapped in tape
•A replacement battery

Replacing the Battery

The exact procedure for replacing a key fob battery will vary depending on the model year of your vehicle. Make sure to check your owner's manual as a reliable guide, especially if your Mazda was made before 2016. But, generally speaking, the following steps should apply to most Mazda models.

1. Take out the auxiliary key by pressing the auxiliary key button on the back of the key fob.
2. With a tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver, unscrew the opening to loosen the fob cover. Then, slide the screwdriver into the gap created and slide it down until you can remove the cover entirely.
3. With the cover off, remove the battery cap and take the dead battery out of the fob. Make sure the rubber ring does not come off at this point.
4. Insert the new battery into the fob with the positive terminal facing the top of the key fob.
5. Reattach the battery cap.
6. Snap the fob cover back into place.
7. Finally, put the auxiliary key back into the fob.

While this process isn't necessarily complicated, keep in mind that replacing a damaged key fob is considerably more expensive than replacing a battery. To avoid harming the key fob, we recommend visiting a trained technician when you need to replace your key fob battery.
