How to Fold the Rear Seats in Your Mazda6

Did You Know the New MAZDA6 Has Fold Flat Seats?

Thanks to a spacious trunk and incredibly versatile second-row fold flat seats with a pass-through feature, the new Mazda6 offers the flexibility you’d expect from a larger car while still delivering exceptional maneuverability and engaging performance.

What is a Pass-Through Rear Seat?

Simply put, a pass-through rear seat is a row of second or sometimes third-row seating commonly found in SUVs and sometimes in special sedans like the Mazda6 that features a center “pass-through” opening, usually covered by an armrest and plastic panel.
Often, pass-through seats that are also fold-flat seats can also be folded flat in a 60/40 or 50/50 pattern so that one or more passengers can fit in the vehicle with oversized cargo items. Sometimes, though, pass-through seats are not fold flat seats. In those cases, the vehicle will still include a pass-through that you can open by pulling the center armrest down and opening a (usually lockable) plastic pass-through door.

Pass through seats are most often used to accomodate items that are long, but not too wide (generally less than around 8-10″) such as 2x4s or other lumber, ski poles, yard stakes, and more.

If you’re lucky, the next vehicle you buy or lease will have both fold-flat and pass-through rear seating, like the new MAZDA6!

How to Make the Most of MAZDA Fold Flat Seats

The Mazda6 can comfortably seat up to five people, but when you need extra room for additional cargo, the rear seats easily fold flat to accommodate larger loads. This set of fold flat seats, otherwise sometimes known as a “pass through rear seat,” can help you make the most out of your fuel-efficient Mazda sedan when you need to carry more. How exactly do you use the fold flat seats in the Mazda6? We’ve created a step-by-step guide for folding your Mazda6’s rear seats.

  1. The first thing you’ll need to do when folding the rear seats is open the trunk. The levers used to disengage the rear seatbacks are located in the trunk and not in the cabin. This saves interior space and allows for the seats to fold flush.
  2. Inside the trunk, you’ll see one lever with a seat icon on it on the right side, and another on the left side of the upper part of the trunk. These levers are easily identifiable and easy to pull. Make sure you pull both levers if you intend to fold flat both the right and left rear passenger seats.
  3. Once both levers are activated, the seats should easily fold flat. If the seatback doesn’t smoothly fold, double-check that you engaged the corresponding lever in the trunk.
  4. Once the right seat is folded, repeat this step on the left side of the vehicle.
  5. The seatbelts can be easily repositioned to the front of the rear headrests to allow for additional room.

That’s all there is to it! You’re ready to enjoy the convenience of truly flexible seating. Of course, don’t forget to close the trunk before taking off.
