The new CX-5 represents Mazda in the compact crossover class and has done so since the vehicle's introduction in the 2013 model year. What type of power and handling will I get out of the CX-5?

The Mazda CX-5, for the 2017 model year, is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder SKYACTIV-G engine. It puts out 187 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 185 lb-ft torque at 4,000 rpm for AWD. The engine works with a SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-speed automatic transmission and comes with either front wheel drive or i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive.  Mazda has stiffened the CX-5's structure by 15% and added new sound-dampening measures to quiet the cabin and reduce impact noise over bumps. The CX-5 uses the automaker's G-Vectoring Control technology, which enhances steering response through subtle engine-torque manipulation. The electrically assisted steering pleases drivers looking to get a hands-on feel to the road, and Smart Brake Support offers direct and reassuring braking capabilities.

With three trim levels to choose from, which is best for me?

The 2017 CX-5 is available in Sport, Touring or Grand Touring trim levels. Which trim you go with depends on your budget, needs, and taste. All trim levels are well appointed and all offer the buyer a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The engine on all three trim levels is the same - an 187-hp, SKYACTIV 2-G 2.5L DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine.  The Sport, even though its the base model, comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen with Mazda's Connect infotainment system, a backup camera and a 40/20/40-split folding backseat that reclines. You will also get 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. When you step up to the Touring model the list of standard features gets a lot longer. You will get full keyless ignition and entry, heated front seats with lumbar adjustment, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable driver seat, two additional speakers and two more USB ports. If you are looking for a vehicle in the luxury direction that is absolutely packed with amenities, go with the top-level Grand Touring model. Standard goodies include 19-inch wheels, turn-swiveling headlights, leather upholstery, a power liftgate, automatic wipers, a premium Bose audio system; and that's just to name a few. You will also get a full suite of Mazda's safety technology, including Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, and Smart Brake Support.

What makes the CX-5 better than its competitors?

If you are in the market for a new compact crossover there are many choices. In fact, the Mazda CX-5 faces some stiff competition in this crowded vehicle segment, among them the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape. The CX-5 has certainly been a leader since its introduction, but for the 2017 model year it is essentially redesigned, pushing it ever higher above its competition. One of the CX-5's strong points is its driving abilities. Where many other crossovers lean and handle at a basic level, the Mazda features well-controlled body movements and sharp steering with a poised chassis, making it an easy choice for enthusiasts. Add that to its elegant design, refined cabin, easy-to-use infotainment, advanced safety tech, and its class-above sophistication, the CX-5 more then holds a top spot in its class.

Final Thoughts on the New Mazda CX-5

Throughout the Mazda CX-5's first generation of production it was clearly a hit; it became Mazda's second-fastest vehicle to reach 1 million units of worldwide production, only behind the Mazda3. The CX-5 went on to win multiple awards, magazine comparison wins, and a true love of the model itself worldwide. So as the CX-5 carries into its second generation, it has already shown that it will continue its success. With a added refinement, more engine options, increased amenities and a completely redesigned interior it is easy to see why the Mazda CX-5's demand is at an all-time high.
